Athletes unite in Zululand 56km marathon

THE 2018 Zululand 56km Ultra Marathon was held on Sunday, March 11.

The race organisers Nongoma and Ulundi Athletic Clubs, displayed how two clubs can work together and organise a successful event.

The clubs’ collaboration is representation of how sports can bring unity in a community. Checkout Verulam Falcons Athletic Club was represented by its Comrades 2017 silver medalist Derrick Gumede. Gumede used the ultramarathon as comfortable paced Comrades’ qualifier.

He completed in a time of 4:02. His 61st position at Comrades 2017 had earned him, technical assistance from the club in the form of running shorts, compression vests and tights, hats, gloves, watch and running shoes.

The R102 route was peppered by over 50 members participating last Sunday in the 11th Leg of the Asmal’s Hypersave.

Ninji Ntombela continued with her dominance over the 10km run with a time of 58 minutes. Felokwakhe Nxumalo glided through the 15km run in 1:30.

Malungisa Tshikitshwa displayed his fitness and speed with a fast paced 1:38 run in the 21km run.

The walking legends Eddie Singh and Celiwe Ndaba led the 15km and 10km walk respectively. Checkout Verulam Falcons AC’s 21.1km and 10km will be held on May 6 at Kingspark Athletic Stadium at 6.30am.
