A WHITE bakkie crashed through the metal railing of the Maidstone Bridge in Tongaat and fell into the dry riverbed below on Thursday morning last week.

IPSS Medical Rescue paramedic, Paul Herbst said the vehicle veered off the bridge after colliding with an oncoming car.

The driver of the car was unharmed following the incident, but the driver of the bakkie sustained critical injuries which required urgent attention from paramedics when they arrived at the scene of the crash.

“Due to the patient’s extensive injuries, he required advanced life support intervention before being transported to a nearby hospital,” said Herbst.

“Our paramedics had to be lowered down from the bridge using specialised high angle

equipment to gain access to the injured patient in the bakkie,” he added.

Police K9 and Search and Rescue units were also called to assist in the recovery of the injured

driver, who is currently being treated at Osindisweni Hospital near Verulam.
