MORE than three families have been left destitute after the shacks they were living in burnt down in Temple Valley, Verulam last week. The fire destroyed their homes and belongings.

Although the cause of the fire is yet to be established, residents claim that illegal connections could be the cause.

According to residents, a complaint was lodged with eThekwini Municipality to supply electricity to the informal settlement. However, to date nothing has been done.

Resident Pranitha Andhee said her house was also partially damaged when the fire spread from the informal dwellings to her home.

“My garden was totally damaged. I have lodged a complaint with the municipality two times last year, saying that the shacks near our houses were not safe. Roof tiles of my house were also affected,”Andhee said.

Another house that was next to the shacks was also affected.

Ward councillor Johnson Chetty confirmed that a complaint was lodged with the municipality.

“The residents informed officials that these shacks were a disaster waiting to happen because there was great danger of a huge blaze should even one of these shacks catch alight. According to a report that I received, health inspectors were sent to investigate the matter.”
