MAIDSTONE Football Club celebrated a milestone with their 75 year anniversary celebration at the Tongaat Town Hall at the weekend.

The event was to honour those who have supported the club over its long history as one of the historical institutions of sport in the community and development of players.

Club president, Kola Govender said the anniversary celebration was also about reminding the current members and footballers about the history of the club and that with hard work and sacrifice all things are possible.

He said the club is always looking towards the future and development of the sport and they hope to see the sport continue its progression and growth throughout the community.

“We would also like to see the club produce some exceptionally talented footballers who will make their mark in the big name professional clubs of South Africa and overseas,” said Kola Govender.

Govender thanked the various sponsors and members of the community who have contributed to the club and helped reach the success it has had over its history.

Club manager, Moolie Govender said the anniversary celebration was a fitting tribute to the founding fathers of the club, the players and management over the years.

“We also wanted to honour the people who have helped on and off the field, including the mothers who ran the homes while the boys and men were busy on the field,” said Moolie Govender.

At the anniversary, three individuals, Siga Govender, Poony Perumalsamy and Henry Reddy were named Honourary Life Vice Presidents and presented with special blazers.

The guest speakers at the anniversary were Sports Officer of UKZN Thabo Dladla, Poobie Govindsamy from Safa and president of Safa Tongaat, Kuga Padaychee.
