SCORES of residents from different areas in Tongaat took to the streets to raise awareness against women and child abuse last week. The march kicked off from Magwaveni area and proceeded to Sheik Mohideen Stadium in Tongaat.

The marchers sang songs and appealed to the community to report all forms of women and child abuse to the police.

Among the marchers were the family members of two women, Mthokozile (70) and her daughter Nombuso (33), who were shot dead at their home in Magwaveni on October 7.

Ward councillor Zanele Khumalo encouraged women to fight against the abuse of children, saying: “Women are generally more resilient because they are the backbone of the families. We invited the Dube family to attend the march to show them support after two of their members were brutally killed in October.”
