Concern over unregistered voters

2016-03-10 06:00

WITH over 24 million South Africans registered to vote, the Independent Electoral Commission of SA (IEC) has expressed concern that at least nine million South Africans who are eligible to vote have not registered. Almost one in three of those not registered live in Gauteng.

The IEC hoped that at least a million of them would have register over the weekend, CEO Mosotho Moepya said.

Statistics released on last week show that women between the ages of 30 and 39 are the group most eager to cast their votes.

The IEC released statistics of the age groups and genders with the highest number of registered voters. Over three million women between the ages of 30 and 39 years old have registered to vote, with men between 30 and 39 in second place at well over two million. Out of all the age categories, women take first place in the total registered voters numbers, with an overall tally of 13 702 568. Men come in with two million less registered voters at 11 207 155.

Voting stations for the local government elections this year was open on Saturday and Sunday from 8 am to 5 pm. There was over 10 million registration forms, 33 000 “zip-zip” machines to scan the barcodes in ID documents, and 52 000 staff to help voters.
