THE Shell Maidstone Service Station in Tongaat was ranked the best service station in the country after scooping the top award recently.

The petrol station rated was the top service station out of 657 stations.

Amar Singh said Shell has a programme called People Make the Difference Real (PMTDR) aimed to motivate and monitor the performance of retailers against their targets.

The programme enables Shell to view the performance of retailers with the added benefit of allowing them to reward those retailers that perform well and achieve their targets.

“Shell sets a target and [the service station] has to achieve the target. When you achieve a target you have a growth, if you achieve the target they find out your growth and work on a percentage.

“The very important aspect that must be highlighted is that Shell has got the Mystery Motorist Programme (MMP). In this MMP you are marked once a quota by unknown person who comes to your site and buys fuel at your shop [to appreciate the service at the station]. If you pass it you go to the next phase. We did four quotas and we passed them,” he said.

He said that their service station achieved the highest accolade through the MMP programme that is conducted on a monthly basis.

“There is an important criterion at Shell which is part of the MMP . In this programme we have to ensure that the staff is appreciated either by offering incentives or promotions. We have managed to maintain that standard.

“One more thing that Shell is looking into is how you treat the staff. We have a very good incentive system in place whereby the staff are happy to work for us. It is proven. We beat all other servicer stations.”

Singh said a cheque of R100 000 will be distributed among the staff.

“We put another R20 000 and it will be distributed to all the staff. Maidstone values the staff and that is a reason why we decided that the entire money goes to them. Because they are the most important asset,” he said.

“Because we won that, Maidstone Service station now represents the Shell brand [from South Africa] in Dubai and will be competing for the global site of the year in May.

“We are ecstatic about this achievement,” he said.

Ashika Singh said: “For any Shell retailer, this is the highest accolade that you can get. There is no higher accolade than this, so it instills in you a sense of pride and achievement. The celebration to thank all our customers will be announced shortly. Another criterion is Health Safety Security and Environment (HSSE) that is Shell’s biggest focus in any business. This is the core of Shell everything that you do you have to put HSSE in front of you. You have to reach that target that is part of your assessment,” she said.

One of the staff who has been working at the service station for over 10 years Nontokozo Magaqa, said station won the awards through hard work and dedication.

“This really shows that hard work pays off. We are ecstatic about the recent achievement,” she said.
