A GROUP of KZN residents concerned about fuel hikes embarked on a march in Tongaat on Wednesday, July 18.

Supporters of Fuel Prices Must Fall campaign protested in Tongaat from 4am to 6pm.

The purpose of the demonstrations was to demand the establishment of a task team to assess any fuel-related prices and increases and that the price of fuel is maintained at a maximum of R10/litre.

Local residents in Tongaat and Verulam created groups on WhatsApp to mobilise support for the national march.

Founder of the campaign Paul Jenkins said in a statement: “We protested at the premier of KZN offices and handed over our petition and demands for the attention of the President [Cyril Ramaphosa]. We have given the President seven days to respond, failure to do so sees our national plan of action rolling out country wide. We believe that this fuel issue is at the heart of every South African and effect affects everybody, we believe that we are a movement of the people for the people.”

A resident Remini Rachael said: “We are doing this for everybody’s benefit so that petrol will come down. We wanted people to hear our voices. I have a driving school business and petrol prices are affecting us. I fill R200 petrol in the morning and in the afternoon I have to add R200. I used to pay R300 for petrol to last me for almost a month. We appeal to the government to drop petrol prices because it is affecting all of us,”she said.

Another resident Reshma Bansee said: “Petrol price increase is not a political or racial thing. It affects all of us. I was so disappointed to see that the turnout was so poor. Many people did not support us. I was not expecting that because everyone complaints about the fuel increase,” she said.
