SCORES of people took to the Phoenix streets to raise awareness about drug and alcohol abuse on Friday, June 16.

While other citizens in the country were celebrating Youth Day, residents from Verulam, Tongaat, Phoenix and surroundings marched to raise issues that affect their communities.

Tongaat resident, Louie Govender said Phoenix has been identified as one of the areas in Durban that has high number of drug dens.

“The intention was to show the police that the community is fed up with drug lords here.

“We signed a petition and handed it to the Phoenix SAPS.

“The police must support us in our fight against drug abuse in our communities.

“Drugs affect our youth and the community.”

Community leaders representing various organisations took part in the march, which was organised by civic organisations on the North Coast.

Tongaat Ward 61 councillor Dolly Munien said: “The increase in drug abuse should be something our government takes very seriously.

“This year we decided to do something differently, something that will educate the youth and the community.

“We will continue raising awareness on drug and alcohol abuse.”
