Driver shot dead in Verulam

2016-12-22 06:01

A THIRTY-YEAR-OLD driver was shot dead by the police on Indwedwe Road outside Verulam after he failed to stop at a road block in Tongaat on 17 December.

The deceased was identified as Sphiwe Khumalo. Police spokesperson in Verulam Captain Mark Prakasim said police were conducting a road block on the Tongaat’s Watson Highway at about 1.30am on Saturday morning when they tried to stop the driver of a bakkie who was driving recklessly.

Prakasim said the driver refused to stop despite numerous attempts made by the police. The driver knocked a police van belonging to Tongaat SAPS before he fled the scene towards Verulam.

“The police gave chase towards Verulam. When the suspect was on Indwedwe Road outside Verulam the police tried again to stop him. He was driving recklessly and he knocked the police van again. The police fired a shot at the tyres on his car in attempt to stop him. Unfortunately, the bullet accidentally hit him on his neck and he died at the scene.

“A case of murder is being investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate. There was a case of attempted murder that opened against the driver after he knocked a police van.” Prakasim confirmed that the driver was not armed and the police did not find anything in his car.
