A 70-year-old man who was mauled by a dog whilst dropping off garments at the home of a dressmaker in Tongaat last month, has died in hospital.

Soobramoney Pandaram died due to the severity of the dog bites he sustained after a dog believed to be a boerbull attacked him in Belgate, Tongaat on June 26.

The victim was taken to Netcare Alberlito Hospital and transferred later to Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital on June 27, for his facial operation as he had sustained serious bites to his face. However, he died a week later.

A source close to the family told the Weekly: “He was unconscious in hospital from the day he was admitted until he died. He was unable to speak.”

Netcare 911 paramedics at the scene on June 26, said the victim had sustained “life-threatening injuries”.

Ward councillor Dolly Munien advised all dog owners to keep their dogs locked up and fence their homes.

“At this point we are not blaming dog owners for what happened, but we are saying everyone owning a dog should ensure that it is kept enclosed.
“In Belgate and Belvedere I have seen vicious dogs on the streets.
“It’s dangerous to have a vicious dog in a residential area.”

Pandaram's funeral service was held at the Belvedere Community Hall on Saturday, July 15.
Pandaram leaves behind his wife, four children and grandchildren.
