THE murders of a Cottonlands couple have left the community reeling in shock. The bodies of Roy (68) and Kay Singh (68), thought to be farmers, were found in their bedroom on Monday, September 3. According to a statement by Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) Kay’s body was found lying face down in the bath tub with her hands tied behind her back. Singh’s body was found on the floor of the bathroom with stab wounds to his neck.Head of Rusa Prem Balram said in the statement: “She is believed to have been strangled however, this is yet to be confirmed. Singh’s body was found on the floor of the bathroom with stab wounds to his neck,” Balram said. Balram added that the lock on a security gate leading to the veranda was forced open. “Officers climbed through an open window and found a pool of blood covered with a towel at the entrance of the bedroom. A blood trail led Rusa officers to the bathroom which was locked,” the statement said. Ward councilor Johnson Chetty said: “It is totally unacceptable that our vulnerable-aged people are not safe in the sanctuary of their own homes. These heartless criminals prey on soft targets. This couple was brutally killed for self gain. They toiled in their little garden and sold their produce at the local market. They worked hard for their meagre possessions. Nobody has the right to deny this couple their rights to property and the most important of all. I am hoping that the justice system finds these perpetrators and throws the book at them,” Chetty said. Police spokesperson in Verulam Captain Henry Kisten said two cases of murder were opened.“We received a call about murder that happened in Cottonlands. When the police arrived at the scene, they discovered that a car, TV and Hi-Fi system were stolen from the victims house. The motive of the murder is still not clear. There are no arrests made at this stage,” Kisten said. However, the Verulam SAPS could not confirm if the two victims were farmers.
