VERULAM SAPS’ Crime Prevention Unit arrested a 41-year-old man in Zwelisha for possession of an unlicensed firearm on Sunday 15 November.

The arrest was made during a stop-and-search operation during which five live rounds were also confiscated from the suspect.

The stop-and-search operation was part of the festive season operations which recently began.

Verulam SAPS communications officer Warrant Officer Mark Prakasim said the suspect has been detained and will appear in court this week for a bail application.

“As we near the festive season more operations targeting [unlicensed] firearms will take place,” said Prakasim.

Prakasim commended the officers for their vigilance in recovering the firearm and has warned law breakers that zero tolerance for any crime will be applied to anyone contravening the law.

“We have increased booze bus operations, stop and search and cordon and search of areas.

“We have increased raids on shebeens and the monitoring of all bars and taverns,” said Prakasim.

“We want to create a safe and secure environment running up to the festive season and there is zero tolerance for any crime.”

The festive season operations have also seen 10 arrests for drunk driving in the past week.

“The alcohol level limit is zero, and no exceptions will be made.

“We will be increasing the bail for drinking and driving and in some cases there will be no bail,” said Prakasim.

Police are also monitoring exit areas where criminals are known to use as escape routes.

“There is increased patrols and this will continue throughout the festive period particularly areas used as escape routes,” said Prakasim.

Prakasim urged residents to report any crime to the station on 032 541 5222.
