A CASE of reckless and negligent driving was opened after a bus crashed into a home at Sita Ram Farm on October 1.

The bus was travelling to the eMona area when the driver lost control and the bus overturned and landed on its roof on an unoccupied shack.

Fifteen passengers were injured and transported to hospitals by ambulance services.

It is alleged that the driver of the bus fled the scene after residents allegedly threatened to burn the bus.

Police spokesperson in Tongaat, Captain Patrick Ngwane, said: “The police opened a case of reckless and negligent driving.

“Police were informed at the scene that the driver fled after the accident.

“No arrest has been made at this stage.

“Our investigating officers are still obtaining statements from the passengers,” Ngwane said.

One of the passengers who was in the bus, Zakhele Ngcobo, said that the driver was drunk.

“We suspect that the driver was drunk. He was not following the rules of the road,” he said

However, Ngwane could not confirm if the allegations made by the passengers were true.

“We heard rumours that the driver was under the influence of alcohol.

However, we cannot confirm that at this stage because the police are still obtaining information from passengers,” Ngwane said.

The head of Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa), Prem Balram, said in a statement: “Residents in the area gathered at the scene and threatened to burn the bus because they felt that the driver was reckless.

“Approximately 15 other passengers sustained minor injuries. However, they declined medical assistance.”
