A MAN (25) drowned in the Wewe River in Fairbreeze outside Tongaat on Sunday, November 12.

The deceased was identified as Jerry Nxumalo from eMona, a rural village outside Tongaat. According to reports, Nxumalo and his friend were trying to place a fishing net in the river when he got into difficulty and drowned. According to Nazir Sadack for the Community Response Team (Cert) his team received a call from the public alerting them about the drowning.

“Cert volunteers were dispatched and simultaneously were notified that SAPS Search and Rescue and IPSS Medical Rescue [teams] were also en route.”

Sadack said an initial search and dive operation was conducted, however, the body could not be located. Sergeant Clinton Odayar said search and rescue divers entered the river and found Nxumalo’s body the second time. “His friend tried to save him, but the water was too deep and he was unable to help him.”
