Fraudster remanded in custody

2015-11-11 06:00

TONGAAT fraud accused, Ambigay Govender, also known as Jeannie, has been remanded in custody after appearing in court for bail following her arrest for fraud charges amounting to around R450000 recently.

According to police, Govender was informing senior citizens that she was selling property investments and she would ask them to pay an investment amount.

Tongaat SAPS communications officer, Warrant Officer Manisha Maharaj-Marie said Govender would give the investor the first months interest and this would make the victim get carried away and invest more money.

“After doing this they don’t hear from her or any sign of their investments,” said Maharaj-Marie.

Speaking to the Coastal Weekly, a victim, speaking anonymously, described the torment her family were going through after she invested all her savings.

“We are having sleepless nights because our savings are all gone. We don’t know what to do,” said a senior citizen who says she invested more than R300 000.

The senior citizen says she first invested R100 000 and after one month and she got R10000 in interest back and decided to invest more until the amount she had invested exceeded R300 000.

After almost all her and her family’s wealth were invested, she says they stopped hearing from the fraudster.

“I’m worried now because we put all our savings in this and everyone I know has lost big amounts,” said the alleged victim.

Maharaj-Marie has urged the community to be vigilant with their money and be wary of any opportunities to invest.

She said if people are unsure of the authenticity of an investment they need to exercise caution ensure it is legitimate before losing their money and property to scams.

Police have urged anyone who may have fallen prey to this investment to contact Detective W/O SG Naidoo on 0828567917.
