MANDELA Day also known as, Nelson Mandela International Day, is held on 18 July annually, which marks the day of Mandela’s birthday. The day is set aside to remember the South African icon Nelson Mandela’s achievements in working towards democracy, human rights, peace, and reconciliation. Mandela Day not only celebrates his life, but it is also a call for people to recognise their ability to have a positive effect on others around them. For Mandela Day 2016 the Rotaract Club of Verulam embarked on a blanket drive. Blankets that were collected were distributed to needy communities around the Verulam area. Canelands, Riet River and the Verulam CBD were the main focus areas for the distribution. The club also distributed slippers. The club, with the help of the community and sponsorships of blankets and cash, collected more than 200 blankets, which was distributed at the weekend in honour of the father of the nation, Mandela. Due to the sacrifice that Madiba made for the nation, club members braved the rain and cold weather so that these communities received their blankets. The club would like to thank those who gave towards the club’s collection of blankets.
