AT LEAST 600 Hindu devotees flocked to the Kavady festival held at the Shri Siva Subramaniar Alayam (temple) in Verulam on Thursday, 9 February.

Young and old participated in the procession and took vows to carry Kavady for the Lord Muruga.

This year 600 devotees carried Kavady from Umhloti River to the temple.
The Kavady festival is one of the most important and sacred ceremonies in the Hindu calendar that is observed throughout the world by Hindu devotees.

According to senior members from the temple Kavady festival was brought into South Africa by the indentured labourers.

One of the trustees from the temple Dharmalingum Lingappen told the Weekly: “Through this festival people get healed spiritually and take vow to carry Kavady. Devotees come from different areas in Verulam and surroundings.
“We had 4000 devotees that attended the festival and 600 people carried Kavady. Since the inception of the temple we have been conducting this religious ceremony. The temple is 115 years old.”
