THE Gayathri Peedam will host its sixth Peedam annual awards at the Kraydeb Conference Centre in Everest Heights on Saturday January 27.
The spiritual organisation will honour the academic achievements of the children and young adults of the ashram from Grade 0 to post-graduate tertiary level.

Devrisha Jhumman from Stanger and Darren Deeplal (Riverside), who graduated with B.Com (Honours) from UKZN and Varsity College respectively, will be joined at the podium by Hiresh Ravjee (Glenwood), who obtained a management degree from Mancosa as the Peedam’s top performers at this year’s function.

The organisation’s selfless service award acknowledges those who go the extra kilometre to uplift the ashram and the community of Verulam.

The Gayathri Peedam awards also provide a platform to showcase the achievements of the secondary schools in Verulam by honouring the top three pupils and the top three secondary schools in the National Senior Certificate exams of the previous year.

Verulam Secondary and its pupils will once again dominate as top achievers in the 2017 NSCE among the Verulam secondary schools.
Emerging giants, Trenance Park Secondary made its intentions quite clear that in the near future they hope to walk away with the coveted silverware as the top performing schools in the NSCE among the Verulam secondary schools.

The top achiever at Verulam Secondary, Zakkiya Hoosen, who scored 95.1% aggregate in the 2017 NSCE which earned her a second place in the Pinetown District and eighth in KwaZulu-Natal, will be the toast of the sixth annual function.

For the first time the Gayathri peedam awards will showcase the top three Grade 7 pupils from primary schools in Verulam - Dawncrest, Redcliffe, Everest Heights, Verulam, Dianthus and Lotusville.

Verulam Secondary principal Siva Govender will be the keynote speaker.
Govender is passionate about his job and has a proud record as being a community activist in environment awareness programmes and sports development through the Checkout Verulam Falcons Athletic Club and Tonver.

The audience can look forward to an inspiring address that will chronicle Govender’s journey from humble beginnings to a visionary leader of trailblazers Verulam Secondary school.

Henry Ramkissoon, Dingalings’ comedian will entertain the gathering in a 20-minute comedy slot. - Supplied.
