KZN’S national KSA champion Osman Ghoor, is aiming for the Olympics in 2020 in Tokyo, after being crowned national champion last week.

Ghoor defeated all opposition at the KSA National Championships. The current number-one ranked Protea fighter won a silver medal last year at the All Africa Championships in Cameroon.

He was in top form at the nationals and dominated in the 21-year age group kumite (fighting) category throughout the event.

Ghoor said: “I am aiming high towards qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics,” he said.

World Karate Federation (WKF) licensed coach Brando Pillay, who mentors and coaches the multiple title holder Ghoor, was delighted at his prodigy’s success.

“Osman is a world-class fighter and provided he stays focused, I remain optimistic he will soon win a WKF world title,” Pillay said.

President of KSA Sonny Pillay, delivered the keynote address at the event and paid tribute to athletes such as Ghoor and others whose high-quality performances augur well for the possibility of South African karate tournament fighters achieving great success on the WKF circuit in the near future.

“Osman is a rare talent and if he continues his current outstanding work, I firmly believe he will qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics,” Pillay said.

Pillay said Ghoor will prepare for the forthcoming WKF World Cup at coaching workshops at the Tongaat Sports Centre (Skisa HQ ) under Protea coach Brando Pillay.

His parents said they remain firmly behind their superstar’s karate career.

His father Ahmed Ghoor, a fellow seasoned karate teacher in KZN, said: “Osman has made the Rainbow Nation proud with his recent achievements.”
