IN an effort to deter motorists from drinking and driving, courts have been issuing hefty fines to offenders.

In the first case, the accused was stopped by the police and was found to be driving his vehicle whilst under the influence of alcohol.

The drunk driver appeared in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court where he was found guilty and fined R40 000, of which R30 000 was suspended for a period of five years and three months.

In the second case, the accused was stopped at a road block. He appeared in Verulam Magistrate’s Court where he was found guilty and fined R40 000. Of that, R30 000 was suspended for three years and he was ordered to pay R10 000 or serve nine months imprisonment.

SAPS Verulam spokesperson Captain Henry Kisten said: “The magistrate, in passing sentence, said these sentences should serve as a warning to motorists that if they are caught for these offences they will be facing stiff sentences.

We are also warning motorists, as the festive season is approaching, there will be continuous road blocks.”
