PUPILS of Mbonisweni Primary School in Hambanathi Township, Tongaat dressed up in colourful and comfortable traditional regalia in celebration of Heritage Month.

“Over the years, we have successfully held programmes of this nature. We are grateful for the support that grows each and every successive year, both from the staff and the community – who through collaborative efforts, ensure the success of the initiatives that the school partakes in,” said principal, Ziphiwo Mahlobo.

Some of the activities celebrating heritage included a praise poetry, Zulu and Indian song and dance, religious performances, recitals and other performances by local artists Kepza SA and Q-Cee.

Traditional foods, like breyani, dumpling, tripe and Maghewu, was served.

The event was attended by all pupils at the school, the community, proud parents, stakeholders and Mbonisweni Primary Alumni.

Grade R teacher Nokuthula Mthethwa said: “I am very proud that the school together with the programme organisers executed such an important event that talks about our heritage and backgrounds.

“Being a Grade R teacher my little students have been exposed to the importance of learning about our traditions and this definitely augurs well for their beautiful futures, since we are grooming them form a tender age.”
