Ice Pro 1860 10km and 5km challenge

2017-11-23 06:01

THE arrival of the first ship on South African shores will be commemorated on Sunday, November 19 at Amphitheatre with a KZN athletics sanctioned race organised by Lower Tugela Life Skills in partnership with Verulam Athletic Club as logistics partner.

This event is also a fundraiser for community projects and part of proceeds also benefits Childline this year.

A change in format this year sees the return to a Sunday morning fixture as compared to last year’s night race. The race starts and finishes at the amphitheatre on the promenade.

A 6.30am start allows runners and walkers in both 10km and 5km disciplines to sample the beachfront promenade, with the Indian Ocean on either side.

Verulam Athletic Club in partnership with anchor sponsor Ice Promotions - a leader in community projects - has again pulled out all stops to ensure a successful event.

The first 500 finishers will each receive a T-shirt and medals, others will receive special edition medal.

All 5km finishers will receive medals as well.

The community is invited to support this event as both a commemorative race event and fund-raiser. Manual entries can also be lodged at Sports Zone and Durban Runner. Late entries will also be taken on Saturday from 12pm to 5pm and Sunday at 5.30am until the race starts at 6.30am.

Both distances will commence at the same time.

In other news, Vukani Maphumulo secured his early qualification for the Two Oceans and Comrades Marathon with a fantastic 3:29 finish in the 42.2km Bluff Marathon.

With the tough double lapper, energy sapping race route and windy conditions, especially the head wind at Tara Road, runners struggled to get into a rhythm. VAC chairperson Bobby Ramlagan said: “In this context, the performance was an excellent one.”

Time trials and airport runs take place every weekend and start at 5am, with no obligations on those that are interested with a variety of distances from4km up to 15km available.

This is an event open and free to the public.
