THE Imam Hussain Mosque held the annual comradeFatima Seedat memorial lecture to commemorate the day that Seedat was arrested and sent to prison on August 8, 1958 for the second time during the defiance campaign.

Her youngest son, Azad Seedat touched on the life of the stalwart and the great role she played in the struggle.

“Speakers representing various political parties highlighted the role of the women played in the struggle of our national liberation,” Seedat said.

Deputy chairperson of the mosque, Ruwayda Sheikh spoke about the place of women in society and steps they can take to empower themselves.

Residents and members of the Imam Husain Mosque around Ottawa area also attended the function.

Musa Gaza from the SACP thanked the organisers for the invitation to participate in the programme and paid tribute to the great role Fatima Seedat played in the struggle for liberation.

ANC representative Kholiswa Mchiza also encouraged the women to continue in Seedat’s legacy.

Moulana Ali Chinyane of Imam Husain Mosque spoke strongly against women abuse and encouraged women to stand up for themselves and fight against all forms of abuse.
