SOUTH Africa’s karate legend Sonny Pillay jetted off to Linz, Austria n Sunday to represent the country at the WKF World karate congress as head of delegation.

Pillay is expected to address the world congress on the challenges that Karate South Africa (KSA) faces with regards to preparing for the 2020 Olympic games and beyond.

“As a matter of interests the congress will precede the World Federation Karate world cup 2016 that will be held in Austria over four days from 27 to 30 October.

“More than 125 countries with 2 000 athletes will gather in Austria to do battle in the various categories.

“Moreover, the announcement in August during the summer Olympics in Rio, Brazil that karate has been elevated to the Olympic sports and the boom in terms of growth is on the way no doubt,” Pillay said.

Pillay added that he will have a private audience with WKF president Antonio Espinos on making a concerted effort in ensuring the inclusion of karate in the Commonwealth games in 2022 which is destined for the city of Durban.
