VERULAM’S karate superstar Devenderan Govender made a podium finish at the Karate South Africa (KSA) nationals 2017 recently.

The Mountview Secondary pupil reached the semi-finals of the prestigious event and ended up with a bronze medal.

“I am very proud of my achievement as I fought in a very tough division with the best athletes. All athletes were looking for a podium finish to enhance their chances of achieving their Protea colours.”

Sensei Lorenzo Pillay said: “Devenderan is a dedicated, hardworking and talented karate champion. I expect him to soon win a national KSA title.”
KSA president Hanshi Sonny Pillay, who delivered the keynote address at the annual event, was full of praise for Govender and said he (Govender)is focused on his karate career and one day he will reach the world Olympic stage.

“I am confident that Deven is a world beater.”
Pillay, whilst encouraging the youth to engage in karate, cautioned parents to choose wisely prior to enrolling their children in karate clubs.

“It must be noted there exists several bogus so-called karate instructors who are not qualified, but are conducting karate classes. Moreover such clubs don’t belong to Karate South Africa the governing body for karate in South Africa.”
