KARATE South Africa (KSA) will be hosting its South African Open Championships at the Tongaat Sports Centre on June 23 and June 24.

The annual event is coupled with the KSA Prestigious Elite Tournament which includes the top six ranked fighters in the country.

The top KSA athletes from throughout the country will converge on the shores of the North Coast to fight for gold medals in the various categories.

The elite event in particular will serve as an excellent warm-up for the athletes participating in the WKF Olympic qualifier and World Youth Cup the following week in Croatia (Eastern Europe).

President of KSA Sonny Pillay said: “We are expecting fireworks at the weekend’s karate spectacle as the best of the best tournament karate fighters will be here in the kingdom to be crowned champions,” Pillay said.

Pillay urged the karate loving public to come out in their numbers to support the local KZN team.

Tournament director Leo Cuitto said a record number of entries is expected at the event. “Our KSA tournaments are increasing in stature every year and this augurs well for the future of the sport in SA,” he said.

KSA technical convenor Brando Pillay Shihan expressed his optimism about the growth of WKF Olympic karate worldwide ever since karate was announced as an Olympic sport in 2016 in Brazil.

“KSA karate under the world body WKF banner is growing in leaps and bounds in popularity as well as in numbers around the globe and it will be fair to say it is the golden period for our sport karate now, thanks to the Olympic factor,” Pillay said.
