POLICE have issued a stern warning to residents to be vigilant after a man was scammed out of R400 000 cash in Verulam.

According to police, the incident occurred when the victim arranged to visit a traditional healer in Verulam.

“He had financial difficulties and was referred to a traditional healer who is known for assisting people,” Verulam SAPS communications officer Captain Henny Kisten said.

It is alleged that the traditional healer asked the man to pay an initial fee of R100 000 into his account.

“The suspect also asked the victim to pay another R300 000, which totaled to the amount of R400 000. The deposit was made to the suspect’s account. When the victim tried contacting the traditional healer on his cellphone it was continuously on voicemail,” Kisten said. Police are investigating a case of theft and no arrest has yet been made.

With the festive season fast approaching, SAPS warned residents about con artists targeting the unsuspecting.

“We therefore warn the public not to fall prey to con artists when purchasing items online or from other dodgy adverts for items on sale. Communities are also warned not to withdraw large sums of cash, rather transfer into their accounts.”
