QUICK thinking lifeguards saved a man who almost drowned at Umdloti beach on Monday afternoon.

Netcare 911 paramedics were called to Umdloti main beach after receiving a call about a person drowning. Netcare 911's Chris Botha said reports from the scene indicate that the man, a minister from Johannesburg, and his family was at the beach when he decided to go for a swim.

"The man landed in a strong rip current and was quickly pulled out to sea, his head going under the water several times," said Botha.

"Quick action from the lifeguards diving into the rough sea ensured that they got to the swimmer before he disappeared under the water."

Botha said the lifeguards managed to pull the man suffering from near drowning symptoms back to the beach where they were met by the Netcare 911 advanced life support paramedics.

"After medics stabilised the man at the scene, they transported him to a hospital in Umhlanga for the care that he required," said Botha.
