Mandela and 1860 commemorate run planned

2016-11-24 06:02

THIS year will see the second running of the Mandela Legacy run and walk at Blue Lagoon, Green Hub on 15 December.

However, Verulam Athletics Club (VAC) has decided to incorporate the 1860 indentured labourer commemoration run as part of the club’s contribution towards social cohesion and celebration of 156 years of the arrival of our forbearers to South Africa.

The twilight race starts at 6.15pm at the banks of the Umgeni River, then progresses along the picturesque beachfront promenade with the Indian Ocean on the left as runners proceed towards the Suncoast casino complex and beyond along the beachfront, amidst the holiday revelry and out of province visitors is a great experience not to be missed.

The event combines a 5km and 10km run and walk – all commencing the same time.

This allows families and friends to run and walk together whilst taking in the ambience of the roar of the waves lapping on one side and the throngs of people on the other side of the promenade – a walking and running haven designed just for the broader public in South Africa.

The first 500 10km finishers will receive an Ice Pro sponsored t-shirt as well as a special made indentured commemorative medal, whilst the balance will receive medals only.

All fun run finishers will receive medals only.

Entry fees are: R80 per licenced person in the 10km event and R20 entry fee for the 5km fun run.

Many participants at last year’s race decided to enjoy the evening after the race with family along the banks of the famous Umgeni River – Blue lagoon precinct.

Presented as part of legacy events by Lower Tugela Lifeskills Committee and organised by Verulam Athletic Club, coupled with the magnanimous support by Ice Promotions, the event is a must for all – both licensed and unlicensed members of the public.

The second of the My Life, My Future campaign against Social Ills event enjoys the backing of Ilembe District and all clubs are urged to support this event. There are various opportunities for registration - the online option is available via or direct deposits on Just 4 Sport. Entry boxes are also available at KZN Athletics and Durban Runner.

For clubs with block booking locally – Tongaat , Phoenix and Verulam - contact the organisers on 083 783 6363 to make arrangements to submit entries.

Entries can be dropped off at Asmalls Hyper or Bhagwans at Tongaat.

Organisations interested in participating or assisting are welcome to contact Verulam Athletic Club.

VAC and Lower Tugela Lifeskills looks forward to seeing you on 15 December at the Green Hub, Blue lagoon. - Supplied.
