TWO men were attacked and their car set alight in Verulam on Tuesday night, June 4. The victims were in a vehicle ,monitoring passing taxis, when they were attacked. According to Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa), one of the victims sustained a cut to his head.

Rusa said in a media statement: “He [victim] explained that he is a member of a taxi association. He and a friend were seated in his vehicle, monitoring passing taxis, when they heard the back glass on the vehicle break. The two men got out of the vehicle and were accosted by two suspects who began assaulting them. The victim claimed that both suspects were wearing balaclavas.” The victims managed to flee in opposite directions while one suspect fired a volley of shots at them.

The injured victims are believed to be members of a taxi association in Verulam however SAPS Verulam could not confirm if the attack was related to taxi violence.

Rusa operations centre received a called from a resident of in Everest Heights reporting an injured man on their property. The officers proceeded to the residence and, upon arrival, located the owner of the Toyota Tazz bleeding from a cut to his head.

SAPS Verulam spokesperson Captain Henry Kisten said: “A case of malicious damage to property and assault GBH were opened. No arrest has been made at this stage. The motive of the attack is still not known.”
