THE family of a middle-aged couple, who died in Hambanathi Township over the weekend after their house caught alight, is appealing to businessmen and the public for donations.

The Mkhabela family told the Weekly that their mother, Rebecca Mkhabela (63), and her partner Mzikayifani Sibiya (60), died on Sunday at around 9pm.

The son, who lives with them, Vusi Mkhabela (39) said the couple used a paraffin lamp in their house.

“I went to my neighbour’s house to charge the battery for my cellphone. To my surprise, I heard the neighbour screaming. He told me that my mother’s house was on fire.

“I went back home to investigate and when I arrived the house was engulfed in flames. We tried so hard to extinguish the flames, but it was too late. The fire was spreading to other houses.” Continued on page 3
