TONGAAT police have arrested a man in connection with the rape and murder of a 35-year- old woman in the area.

On the morning of Friday, 1 May, the body of Tongaat resident Precious Mlaba was found in the sugarcane fields around Tongaat.

According to police some of her possessions including her shoes, underwear and handbag were lying nearby.

Warrant officer Manisha Maharaj-Marie said police arrested the suspect only a few days after Mlaba’s body was discovered.

“Crime Prevention officer Sergeant TM Govender, worked extensively in the area to locate the suspect,” said Maharaj-Marie.

“He received information of the suspect leaving the area on the morning of Saturday, 2 May to travel to the Eastern Cape, where the suspect is originally from,” she added.

Sergeant Govender tracked a friend of the suspected killer to Flagstaff in the Eastern Cape, who was then able to point out where his residence was, added Maharaj-Marie.

On Tuesday, 3 May, Govender - together with Sergeant Brian Moonsamy , Constable SV Khathi and Detective-Constable MK Khuzwayo, proceeded to the small Eastern Cape town, where the suspect was apprehended at his place of residence.

The suspect cannot be named for legal reasons as he is still awaiting trial.

“Tongaat Police management would like to commend Sergeant TM Govender and his team for their excellent work and ongoing , tireless efforts to ensure the apprehension of the suspect,” said Maharaj-Marie.
