Murder suspect on the loose

RESIDENTS in Hambanathi are still reeling in shock after the brutal murder of a man who was attacked and his abdomen ripped open with a knife.

The body of the man was discovered along Gopalall Hurbans Road in Tongaat on July 22.

Member of the Tongaat Community Policing Forum (CPF) Anthony Gumede urged residents to refrain from walking alone in isolated areas.

“We are shocked to hear the devastating news about the brutal murder of one of the residents of Hambanathi. His death shocked the entire community. We appeal to the residents to refrain from visiting isolated areas at night,” Gumede said. He confirmed that the place is a hotspot for robberies.

“There have been a few incidents in the same spot in the night. Women are becoming soft targets for these criminals,” Gumede said.

Tongaat Police spokesperson Captain Patrick Ngwane confirmed the incident.

“The body of the deceased was found near Tongaat High, on the side of the road, with stab wounds all over his body. The motive is unknown at this stage.

“The body was removed to Phoenix Mortuary. There have been no arrests made at this stage. Police are investigating a case of murder.”

Head of Reaction Unit South Africa Prem Balram said in a media statement that two witnesses reported the incident at Rusa’s operations centre in Tongaat.

“Upon arrival, reaction officers found Tongaat SAPS in attendance. The deceased’s abdomen was ripped open, exposing his intestines. He had suffered excessive blood loss. A blood trail measuring approximately 15 metres was found leading from the body to the main road.”

Attempts to get a comment from members of the family were unsuccessful however Gumede confirmed that the family was mourning the death of their son.
