Nair leads team VAC challenge

ONE of the seasoned runners from Verulam Athletic Club (VAC), Velvan Nair led the team in the 30km challenge in a sub- three hour, 3:05 ahead of Sthembiso Nzama in his first novice attempt of the 30km distance held in Verulam recently.

The club’s development programme included the Saturday time trial league, Sunday 10km, 30km challenge and community outreach programme held on Saturday and Sunday.

The 30km challenge was superbly hydrated along the route with team VAC led by Brenda Peters, Krish Naidoo, Bobby Ramlagan, Anand Naidoo, Sarah Naidoo, Alan Govender, Vukani Maphumulo, Joey Chetty and Jaya Kisten.

Ben Padayachee showed what regular training can do with a third overall finish in his 30km challenge easing through in 4:03 ahead of Ronnie Rangasamy in 4:16.

Maharaj and Shirley Narainsamy completed the 30km run in 4:19.

Amith Ramsunder attempted his novice 30km run in his first year in VAC silks in a pleasing 4:24.

Raeesa Bayat was full of praise for the team that co-ordinated the event enjoying her first long challenge in 4:30.

Tharushka Sookoo eased through two minutes later with her mother.

Rajesh Ramdhularie showed the effects of regular training in 4:44, while another regular, Dolly Shamlall, completed her sub-five-hour 4:49 challenge.

Sundree Ramlagan finished in 5:02 while Logan Naidu in his first attempt with Nikhil Misra, Dasen Naidoo and Christopher Peters completed in 5:53.

Team VAC also embarked on a community outreach programme co-ordinating the blind 5km walk and commemorative White Can Rally for the Blind, a 1km walk for the blind from Blue Lagoon to Berea Rovers Club in Durban. - Supplied.
