THE Belvedere Multi-Skills Centre opened its doors to the public on Thursday, February 8.

The official opening ceremony was held at the Belvedere community hall with an attendance of more than 200 people.

Among the people attending were deputy mayor Fawzia Peer, ward councillor Dolly Munien, Vigie Padayachee, other community leaders and residents.

The centre will empower the youth, unemployed and senior citizens through a variety of programmes that the centre intends to be rolling out for the community.

Chairperson Pushpa Govender (72) said the purpose of the multi-skills centre is to empower unemployed people and create job opportunities. “All age groups are welcome to join the centre for free.

“We teach people how to sew, to do saree blouses and much more. We want to create a society that does not wait for the government to provide them with jobs.

“We intend to have a society of hard-working people. Whoever joins our centre will be taught and will attain skills that will help them to earn money by selling their work,” she said.

The centre will be open every Thursday from 10 am to 1 pm at the Belvedere Community hall. For details, contact Pushpa Govender at 032 944 6892 or 073 897 9944.
