Crime Prevention

The Tongaat SAPS’ Crime Prevention Unit (CPU) arrested several people for possession of dagga, heroin, unlicensed firearms, drunken driving and possession of dangerous weapons at the weekend.

Tongaat SAPS communications officer Manisha Maharaj-Marie said the CPU will be holding random operations in different areas of the community throughout 2016. “We are warning people to obey the law because there is a zero tolerance for any illegal activity,” said Maharaj Marie.

A house in Belvedere, Tongaat was broken into at the weekend after the homeowner had left for the night. Tongaat SAPS communications officer Warrant Officer Manisha Maharaj-Marie said the complainant informed police that he had securely locked his home and left.

“The next day he received a call from a neighbour that informed him that his main gate was derailed and the kitchen door and burglar guards were forced in,” said Maharaj-Marie. An LG flat screen TV was stolen while other items were not identified as being stolen at the time. Maharaj-Marie said a case of housebreak-in is being investigated.

Vehicle thief nabbed

A suspect who attempted to steal a red Isuzu bakkie at the weekend was caught by the owner and his friends. Tongaat SAPS communications officer Warrant Officer Manisha Mahraj –Marie said the owner had parked outside a friend’s house and gone in to see his friend when they heard a noise from vehicle outside.

“He went to check and noticed his bakkie moving and gave chase together with his friends,” said Mahraj-Marie. She said the owner and his friends were able to pull all three suspects out from the vehicle and bring the bakkie to a halt. Two of the suspects managed to escape while the third was handed over to police.
