OCTOBER is National Down Syndrome Awareness Month. During the month of October, we celebrate people with Down Syndrome and make people aware of our abilities and accomplishments.

Founder of You’re Magical, Trudy Chetty encourages people to commemorate National Down Syndrome Month. Down Syndrome happens when a child is born with an extra chromosome, leading to delays in physical and mental development.
IAlthough there is no “cure” for Down Syndrome, there are ways to help children with the condition develop into healthy and fulfilled individuals who are able to achieve the level of independence right for them. National Down Syndrome Awareness Day is commemorated to create awareness about Down Syndrome and falls on October 20.

“My son Tristyn Chetty was my inspiration for the commencement of a support group called You’re Magical, which is designed to assist people with Down Syndrome and to let them know they are special, gifted and unique. Our mission is to create and nurture a loving and inclusive community, celebrating every person with a disability, including Down Syndrome.

“We will accomplish this mission by empowering and supporting families and individuals who have been touched by Down Syndrome. We want to work together to increase education, promote public understanding and acceptance, work towards full inclusion, and defend the civil rights of individuals with Down Syndrome,” said Chetty.

If you want to be part of this support group, or require information on Down Syndrome, contact Trudy at 081 022 2500 or Trudychetty@webmail.co.za
