AFTER her international flight from Dubai touched down in Durban on Sunday, 29 May, a Peruvian woman was arrested by King Shaka Airport police for being found with 1.5 kilograms of cocaine in her suitcase.

The 29-year-old woman arrived in Durban in the early evening after travelling on a connecting flight from Lima, Peru via Dubai and was stopped and searched by Durban Organised Crime officers after she disembarked the plane at around 6pm.

King Shaka SAPS’ Warrant Officer Singh said police confiscated the suitcase and an x-ray revealed a foreign substance suspected to be narcotics hidden in the frame of the bag.

“An x-ray revealed she had a foreign substance in her bag, and after we opened it up and tested a sample, we confirmed it was cocaine,” said Singh.

After police confirmed the substance was cocaine, the woman was arrested and taken to Verulam police station for processing. She was held there until her hearing at the Verulam Magistrates Court on 31 May, when she was given a trial date and transferred to Westville Prison, where she is being held until her trial commences later this year.

The 1.5 kilograms of cocaine the woman was carrying is worth an estimated street value of R500,000 and if she is convicted, she could face in excess of 10 years behind bars.
