2017-03-09 06:00

PROFESSOR Anantha Raman is a devotional singer and has been singing and spreading Bhakthi throughout the world for the past 35 years.
He is a disciple of the great bhajan singer Sri. Pithukuli Murugadas and has been awarded Thiruppugazh Isai Selvar by the Bharathi Society of Chennai.
Sri Pithukuli Murugadas helped maintain the cultural and spiritual links with India during the period of isolation perpetuated by apartheid. He visited South Africa many times and performed to packed auditoriums in the country.

Raman sings like his guru, performing and playing the harmonium in an extempore style with both classical Carnatic ragas and Hindustani rare ragas spontaneously, with compositions by Manickavasagar, Jnanasambandar, Arunagirinathar, Subramonia Bharathiar, Meerabai, Kabeerdas, Tulasi Das, St. Tukaram, Gurunanak, St. Tyagaraja, Purandaradas and lyrics by Murugadas. Singing the lords name is his tapas and he sings in various Indian languages. He has done Bhakthi Innisai, Bajan Sandhya, etc. in ashrams across the world.

The Tongaat Hindu Unity Forum and Shree Veeraboga Emperumal Temple, with the Ramakrishna Centre of South Africa, Phoenix, and in celebration of Sri Ramakrishna’s 181st birth anniversary, invites all to a concert featuring the songs of Sri Pithukuli Murugadas.
Admission is free and the venue is the Shree Veeraboga Cultural Centre, 7 Maharaj Street, on Monday from 6.30 pm to 7.45 pm. For details, phone Vedananda at 083 384 0190, Sugie at 073 356 5918 or Yogan at 081 354 9245. -Supplied
