THE swift action by Tongaat SAPS Visible Policing, K9 Unit and Tactical Response Team resulted in the recovery of boxes of cigarettes and the British American Tobacco vehicle in the Sandfields area in Tongaat on Tuesday, 19 July.

According to police spokesman Thulani Zwane the driver was delivering the boxes of cigarettes in the area when he was attacked and hijacked of the vehicle by unknown gunmen.

“The driver was then taken to a secluded area where he was dropped off and instructed to leave,” said the policeman.

“He quickly alerted police who swiftly responded.

“The driver led police to the suspects where the boxes of cigarettes and the vehicle were recovered.

“The Suspects fled on foot when police arrived. A case of hijacking has been opened at the Tongaat police station for investigation and police are searching for the suspects.

“The value of the cigarette is R130 000,” added Zwane.

The KwaZulu-Natal acting provincial commissioner, Major General Bhekinkosi Langa commended police on their swift reaction into attending to the hijacking and assured that the fled suspects will be arrested soon as investigation continues.

“We appeal to the community to assist us in tracing the suspects by providing us with information about their whereabouts.

“We also discourage people not to but stolen goods but they must report such to the police,” he said.
