THE school holidays were jam-packed with exciting activities for Protec pupils who participated in a variety of workshops.

Grade 10 pupils did bridge-building whilst the Grade 11 pupils built steam cars using kits designed by the mechanical engineering faculty at University of KwaZulu-Natal.

The three teams with the strongest bridges will participate in the Saice KZN inter-schools competition August 2. Final year mechanical engineering students also ran a robotics workshop for the Grade 10 and 11 pupils exposing them to high-technology.

Protect Tongaat manager Marion Takis said: “In addition to applying mathematics and physical science concepts in a practical and fun way, these workshops develop good team work, problem solving and communication skills,” Takis said.

Takis said that the workshops also enable the pupils to test their skills and aptitude in engineering and increase their understanding of technology and the environment.

The Grade 12 focused on their studies attending enrichment classes in mathematics, physical science, accounting and life science.

Grade 12 and 11 pupils interested in engineering also had the opportunity of attending a two-day Autocad (computer aid and design) workshop, facilitated by post graduate engineering students.

Takis said Protec is entirely reliant on donations and it is thanks to the generous support of Protec’s generous donors that these pupils are able to participate in these exciting opportunities. — Supplied
