A 19-YEAR-OLD boy is fighting for his life after he was stabbed outside a school in Trenance Park in Verulam last week.

The Grade 12 pupil from Siphesihle Secondary and other pupils were outside the school when three unknown men approached the victim and stabbed him in his chest.

Head of Reaction Unit South Africa Prem Balram confirmed the incident.

Balram said that the victim was involved in a fight with three unknown suspects and one of them drew a knife and stabbed him once in the chest.

Chairperson of Verulam Community Policing Forum Duncan Dube said the incident raised major questions about the safety of children when going to school.

“It is not safe for all of us. The boy is in an intensive care unit in hospital and we wish him a speedy recovery.

“Although the incident took place outside the school premises, it is clear the suspects intended to attack the victim,” he said.

Dube advised pupils to always walk in groups.

“We advise pupils to also avoid isolated areas,” he said. Public relations officer for Osindisweni Hospital Mbongeni Mthimkhulu could not confirm if the victim was still in hospital.

Spokesperson of Verulam SAPS Captain Mark Prakasim said: “We can confirm the incident that happened in Trenance Park where a pupil was stabbed by unknown people. The victim was rushed to Osindisweni Hospital for treatment.

“The motive for the attack is still not known at this stage. Police are investigating a case of assault and GBH. No arrests have been made at this stage,” he said.
