R102 crash death toll rises to seven

SEVEN people aged between 24 and 50 died in a collision involving two cars - a Suzuki and an Open Astra - on the R102 near Verulam last Saturday.

Two Verulam residents, died at the scene while another person (28), died in hospital. According to the reports from the police, the other three occupants from a Suzuki that was coming from Phoenix going to Gateway, died at the scene while the other victim, also 28, in the Suzuki, died later in hospital.

It alleged that the driver of a Suzuki was reversing on the R102 when his car collided with the Astra.

Nick Dollman from Netcare 911 said in a statement: “Netcare paramedics responded to reports of a very serious collision on the R102 near to the Phoenix off-ramp.

“Netcare 911 as well as paramedics from other ambulance services, traffic police and fire and rescue teams all responded to the incident.”

Dollman said both vehicles were left with significant damage. Dollman said both drivers died at the scene.

“Two occupants were alive and trapped in one of the vehicles. Fire fighters used the jaws of life to cut the car and release the trapped occupants from the compacted wreck.
A 15-year-old girl was in a critical condition and placed on a ventilator at the scene while a 17-year-old man had also sustained severe injuries.

“Both were attended to by Netcare 911 Advanced Life Support para- medics and transported by ambulances to hospital for the further urgent medical care that they required.”

Police spokesperson in Verulam Captain Mark Prakasim said: “The police­ were called to the scene where the two cars collided.
“Police are investigating.”
