SAPS Tongaat held a placard demonstration in Tongaat in commemoration of the Child Protection Week on Friday, June 1.

Pamphlets were distributed to motorists and community members at the robot intersection of Watson Highway and Gopalall Hurbans Road.

The SAPS joined the #StandUpForSadia campaign, an initiative aimed at encouraging the community to wear orange in support of the schoolgirl who was shot dead in a botched hijacking incident in Chatsworth.

Police spokesperson in Tongaat Captain Patrick Ngwane said: “Our aim was to join the fight to end gun violence. An appeal was made to the community to say no to the killing of our innocent community and to report immediately, to the police, if they have information about unlicensed firearms or any other criminal activities,” Ngwane said.

Ngwane appealed to parents and guardians to report to the police when their children first go missing and to not wait 24 hours before reporting a missing child.

Ngwane added: “We urge our community to report child abuse.”

Youth Desk co-ordinator Constable Lance Naidoo also visited Fairbreeze Combined School. where he addressed the pupils on issues relating to human trafficking and school safety.

He also educated the children on safety tips to avoid becoming victims of child abuse.

For any child abuse related queries call the SAPS Crime Stop number 08600 1011 or contact Child Line at 0800 55555.
