THE current president of Tonver, Guru Ramcharan, will continue to lead the Tonver Schools Sports Council for another two years, after being re-elected at the organisation’s 12th bi-annual general meeting recently. Ramcharan will steer the organisation through the Nelson Mandela centenary celebrations which will take place over the coming year.Ramcharan expressed his delight at the confidence shown in him to run a sports organisation that has earned the envy of almost all zones and districts throughout the province of KwaZulu-Natal.Special guest at the function, circuit manager for the Billy Nair Circuit, Selvan Chetty, expressed his thanks and appreciation to Ramcharan and his dedicated band of volunteers who have done some sterling work to keep the organisation striving continuously for excellence after 24 years since its inception. Chetty called on all principals to support Tonver, which has fulfilled a major role in the provision of extra-curricular opportunities, which is an integral part of education. In the elections, most of the office bearers returned to take office and serve Tonver for another two years. The Tonver games will take place on July 27 and 28, while the inter-district challenge will take place on August 25. The development tournament for children aged eight years and 10 years is scheduled for October 20. Tonver receives support from 99% of the schools in the Tongaat and Verulam areas. However, Guru said a handful of schools believe that they don’t need sports in their schools. “They choose not provide a platform where a future Bafana Bafana or a Protea can be identified. School management, together with the school governing body, must review their stance of non-participation and provide pupils with a sporting chance in life,” he said.
