Rape suspect denied bail

2018-09-13 06:00

A MAN (Laston Moodley) charged with the murder and rape of a seven-year old girl from Waterloo was denied bail at the Verulam Magistrate’s court on Monday, September 3.

He is accused of raping and killing a child at his flat in Hammond’s Farm area last month. The child sustained a stab wound at her body and she died later in hospital.

However, in his affidavit read out by his legal representative in court, the accused said he intends pleading not guilty on both charges. He told the court that he had never met the victim and that on the day of the alleged incident he was at a local supermarket with his friends. Family members and residents gathered outside court to oppose bail on Monday. The accused will be detained at Westville Prison waiting for his next court appearance. The matter was adjourned for further investigation.

He will appear in court on November 29.
