Mosque attacked by AK47-wielding gunmen: Verulam - The Hazelmere Mazaar was attacked by approximately 10 armed suspects while the evening prayer was in progress on Monday, May 8. At approximately 8pm members of Reaction Unit South Africa were alerted to an armed robbery in progress at the Mosque about 5km from the Verulam CBD. Reaction officers arrived on scene and interviewed a group of worshippers who were robbed of cash, keys and mobile phones.According to witnesses, a suspect pointed a firearm at the head of a 14-year-old boy and forced his father to open the door to the mosque. The suspects armed with AK47s and pistols then entered the building and robbed the worshippers.One suspect then placed a firearm into the mouth of a victim forcing him to open a locked door. He was then assaulted with a firearm. The suspects ransacked several rooms of a residence in the same building and demanded cash. They then fled the scene in a white Ford Bantam bakkie. A glove used by a suspect was recovered on scene.Officers conducted an extensive search for the suspects however, no arrests were made.
