Reaction Unit SA crime report

AT approximately 3pm on Tuesday, August 29, members of Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) were dispatched to a general dealer in Greylands after receiving reports of an armed robbery in progress.

Upon arrival it was established that three suspects entered the store posing as patrons. One suspect drew a firearm and attempted to rob the cashier who took cover under the counter and called for help. The suspects then fled the store empty-handed in an unknown direction. Reaction Officers patrolled the area in search of the suspects, however, no arrests were made.


A 35-year-old man was shot in the chest in a hijacking on Daisy Road in Buffelsdale, Tongaat on Wednesday, August 30.

At approximately 7.45pm members of Reaction Unit South Africa were dispatched to the scene after receiving a call from a member of public requesting medical assistance for the injured man. Upon arrival it was established that the victim was in his Toyota Tazz when he was approached by two men. One produced a firearm and shot the victim in the chest.

The injured man managed to get out of his vehicle and sought assistance at a nearby house. The suspects fled in the victim’s vehicle. SAPS recovered the Toyota Tazz abandoned on an embankment at the entrance of Naninga near the King Shaka International Airport intersection. It is alleged that the suspects lost control of the vehicle on a sharp bend resulting in it crashing into the embankment.

The victim, an employee of CMH Umhlanga, was treated for his injury being transported to hospital in a serious, but stable condition.


At approximately 11.13pm on September 1, members of Reaction Unit South Africa were dispatched to a sports bar on Arbee Drive in the CBD after receiving reports of a business robbery. They established that two suspects had entered the business, produced firearms and robbed an employee of an undisclosed amount of cash and her cellphone before exiting the premises. One suspect was dressed in a white jacket with polka dots while his accomplice had on a black jacket and a balaclava.

Officers conducted an extensive search for the armed men however no arrests were made. It could not be established if they fled on foot or if they had a getaway vehicle parked in the vicinity of the business. No one was injured during the robbery.


At approximately 2pm on Saturday, September 2, members of Reaction Unit South Africa were dispatched to the south bound lane of the R102 at the Ottawa intersection after receiving reports of a motor vehicle accident. Upon arrival a VW Polo was found to have crashed into dense vegetation down a slight embankment on the roadside. The two occupants were not injured however the vehicle was extensively damaged.

The driver, who is a resident of Oaklands in Verulam, said as he passed the intersection he applied brakes when the vehicle suddenly veered off the road.


A 50-year-old woman was injured following a collision at the R102 and Ottawa intersection in Verulam on Monday, September 4.

At approximately 7pm members of Reaction Unit South Africa were called out to the scene by passing motorists reporting the collision. Upon arrival a Hyundai Atos was found to have collided into the side of a Toyota Corolla. A passenger in the Toyota Corolla sustained moderate injuries. She was treated on scene before being transported to hospital in a stable condition. The driver of the Hyundai Atos was not injured. Circumstances surrounding the collision has not been established at this stage.


Members of Reaction Unit SouthAfrica were dispatched to Sunlark Drive in Oaklands, Verulam after receiving reports of an attempted hijacking and an armed robbery on Monday, September 4.

Upon arrival officers were informed that the victim had stopped outside a home and had got out of his vehicle to use the intercom when he was approached by the suspect. The suspect drew a firearm and robbed the man of his cash before demanding the keys to his Toyota Corolla which the 23-year-old refused to hand over. The suspect fled the scene on foot after occupants of the home disturbed him. Officers conducted an extensive search for the gunman who was dressed in blue overalls however no arrests were made.
