63 YEAR OLD KILLED IN FREAK ACCIDENT: VERULAM

A 63 year old man was killed after he was impaled by a wooden beam at his home on Inanda Road in Verulam on Sunday, October 22.

At approximately 4:05pm members of Rusa were called out to the home by members of the victim’s family reporting a structural collapse. Upon arrival it was established that while parking his BMW in the garage the deceased knocked into a supporting concrete beam causing the roof to collapse onto his vehicle. He was killed after a wooden beam penetrated his chest and pinned him against his seat.

Firemen from the Umhlanga Fire and Rescue Services cut the beam with a saw to free the deceased from the vehicle.

ONE INJURED AFTER SAPS VEHICLE OVERTURNS: VERULAM

A 48 year old policeman suffered moderate injuries after the vehicle he was travelling in overturned at a shooting range on Oakford Road in Verulam last Thursday.

At approximately 10:46am members of Rusa were dispatched to the scene after receiving a call from a SAPS official reporting the incident and requesting the assistance of paramedics. Upon arrival a Nissan Impendulo was found lying on its side. A Warrant Officer based at the Hillcrest SAPS, who was one of the nine occupants of the vehicle, sustained moderate injuries. He was treated on scene before being transported to hospital in a stable condition.

It was established that the driver of the Nissan Impendulo was leaving the shooting range after a training session. The vehicle stopped on a steep gradient after two other vehicles stalled in front of it. The driver was forced to reverse several metres downhill and as he turned onto an uneven grass patch the vehicle overturned.

The remaining occupants of the vehicle were not injured in the accident.

TEENAGER DISCOVERS DAD’S BODY: VERULAM

The body of a 37 year old self employed man was found hanging in a vacant outbuilding by his teenage son in Arolla Place in Trenance Park, Verulam on Friday morning.

At approximately 09:25am members of Rusa were called out to the home after the teenager made the discovery. Upon arrival medics found that the man had committed suicide by hanging himself with a leather belt from a wooden beam in the bathroom. He showed no signs of life and was declared dead by paramedics.

It is alleged that the deceased, who runs a private taxi service, had been experiencing domestic related issues for several months.
On the morning he proceeded to his mother-in-law’s residence and climbed through an open window in the vacant outbuilding and hung himself in the bathroom. Several of his clients attempted to contact him when he failed to pick them up for work.

They then contacted his family who began searching for him and discovered his lifeless body in the bathroom

SUICIDE: VERULAM

A 44 year old man committed suicide by hanging himself at his home on Softwood Drive in Trenance Park, Verulam on Friday morning.

At approximately 11:01am members of Rusa were dispatched to the residence after receiving a call from a member of public reporting the incident.

Upon arrival it was established that the deceased was consuming alcohol prior to him locking himself in the bathroom.
When his wife tried to get his attention there was no response. With assistance from her neighbours they managed to force open the bathroom door and found that her husband had hung himself with a nylon rope from a wooden beam. They managed to cut the rope and remove him from the bathroom before calling for assistance. Paramedics pronounced the man deceased upon their arrival.
